“Shady Places” Children’s Book

Title "Shady Places" Speech bubble "My dad has PTSD!" Author Catherine Procque, Lilly L'Arronche
VfU is partnering with Taras Shevchenko's VMHCE and FGIP to create a children's book to help kids navigate the trauma of living through a war.

Volunteers for Ukraine is supporting the publication and distribution of therapeutic children’s books developed by the Global Initiative in Psychiatry (FGIP) to help Ukrainian children cope with the psychological impact of war.

With over 44% of children in Ukraine showing signs of PTSD, these books provide an accessible, research-backed tool to help children process trauma, loss, and uncertainty. Created in collaboration with psychologists, psychiatrists, and families, the Shady Places series uses simple language and storytelling to help children understand complex emotions and rebuild a sense of safety.

More than 25,000 copies have already been distributed free of charge through schools, hospitals, and community organizations. VfU’s support will help fund the continued production and expansion of this series, ensuring more children and families have access to critical mental health resources.
